Microsoft’s Xbox division has agreed to publish Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage title, Physint, following Sony’s decision to withdraw from the project earlier this year. The move marks a significant shift in the gaming landscape, as the Metal Gear Solid creator had been heavily tied to PlayStation Studios since the game’s debut.
The announcement unfolded rapidly on social media platform X. PlayStation Studios revealed on Tuesday that it was ending its collaboration with Kojima Productions on Physint. The statement emphasized that the decision was made after “careful consideration” but assured that the two parties would continue to work closely together on future endeavors.
Within minutes, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that her company was stepping up to take over the project. She referenced both Physint and Kojima’s previously announced Xbox title, OD, praising the ongoing collaboration with the developer based in Japan.
Kojima himself confirmed the partnership, expressing surprise at Sony’s mid-June cancellation notice. He described Physint as a personally significant project and noted that his studio spent three months searching for a new publisher before reuniting with Xbox. “We found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future,” Kojima wrote.
Beyond video games, the renewed agreement extends into film and television production. An Xbox Wire post highlighted that the partnership will explore cross-media storytelling, aiming to bring new narratives to broader audiences. This expansion comes amid rumors of potential cinematic adaptations, a possibility hinted at when Columbia Pictures appeared alongside Kojima and Hermen Hulst during the game’s initial reveal in early 2024.
Sony’s departure from the Physint project raises questions about the development status that led to the breakup, especially given the public fanfare surrounding the title’s original launch. Despite the abrupt change, both Kojima Productions and Xbox have positioned the deal as a fresh chapter for their continued creative alliance.
Kojima finally has a home where he isn’t fighting for screen time against Spider-Man. Smart move by Xbox to grab this exclusive.
Is ‘Physint’ a typo or some weird Kojima made-up word? Also, film adaptations already? He hasn’t even finished the game!
Wait, Sony dropped it just days before reveal? That’s wildly unprofessional. Hope Xbox treats him better than they treated Cyberpunk 2077.
