WASHINGTON — President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a conciliatory chord during their summit on Thursday, with both leaders highlighting shared history and personal rapport even as significant policy disagreements loom.
During an arrival ceremony for the visiting Chinese leader, President Trump called for increased collaboration between the United States and China, drawing parallels to the military alliance formed during World War II. In response, President Xi underscored the mutual respect he has developed with his American counterpart. Xi also announced an initiative to invite 100,000 American students to visit China over the next five years, alongside a pledge to loan two pandas to the Atlanta Zoo.
President Xi reiterated the concept of “strategic stability” as the foundation for Sino-American relations, a diplomatic framework first introduced when the two leaders met in Busan, South Korea, last October.
Despite the friendly rhetoric, the summit takes place against a backdrop of intensifying friction across technology, trade, and regional security. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed earlier in the week that Washington and Beijing are exploring mechanisms to warn each other about AI incidents posing national security risks. This comes amid concerns from U.S. AI executives who have called for a slowdown in development to ensure public safety. China’s government recently rejected these proposals, with a spokesperson accusing the calls for safety rules of being an attempt to stifle Chinese competitiveness.
Meanwhile, China’s AI sector continues to expand rapidly, supported by hundreds of billions in state funding and a government target for AI-powered technology to permeate 90% of key industrial sectors by 2030.
