Ryan Haas, director of the China Center at the Brookings Institution, noted that the display of courtesy was intentional. “Trump will show Xi courtesy and respect. Meanwhile, Beijing continues to heavily fund its AI sector, aiming for the technology to permeate 90% of key industrial sectors by 2030.
Geopolitical concerns regarding Iran also loom over the summit. The U.S. has maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz for months, disrupting approximately 12% of China’s oil imports. As Iran’s largest trading partner, China’s role is expected to be a key topic, with analysts suggesting Trump may ask Xi to assist in facilitating peace talks with Tehran.
