Amid intensifying global discussions on artificial intelligence governance, President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held several hours of talks at the White House on Thursday. The meeting preceded a state dinner featuring prominent figures from the tech industry.
Following the session, President Trump described the discussions positively during remarks on the Southern Portico. He also provided a brief tour of the grounds, including the South Lawn Helipad, to his Chinese counterpart.
Both leaders addressed the rapid advancement of AI during opening statements in the White House grand foyer. President Xi emphasized that AI development must remain under human control, while the broader context of the visit highlighted the growing intersection of technology and diplomacy.
A White House official confirmed that Thursday evening’s state dinner would include a lineup of major technology executives: Amazon Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
According to Chinese state media reports, President Xi raised concerns regarding Iran during the bilateral meeting. He expressed hope that Washington and Tehran would resume negotiations and indicated China’s support for both nations to recommit to a 14-point memorandum of understanding established months prior.
On the subject of Taiwan, Xi stated he hopes the United States will uphold its position opposing Taiwanese independence. While the U.S. has not officially endorsed independence for the self-ruling island, it has historically supplied weapons to the region and is viewed as a critical factor should China attempt military action.
Earlier in the day, President Xi called for enhanced cooperation between the two nations. He proposed increasing direct flights between the U.S. and China and extended an invitation for 100,000 American students to participate in cultural exchange programs over the next five years.
Continuing a diplomatic tradition dating back to the Nixon era, President Xi announced that two pandas, named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, would be sent to Zoo Atlanta in the coming days.
“China and the United States must hold the line of no conflict and no confrontation between us, and we can certainly find the right path for two great countries to get along on this planet we both call home,” Xi said.
This marks the first second formal state visit by a Chinese leader to the United States. Xi previously received an invitation from President Barack Obama for a state visit in September 2015, three years after assuming the role of General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party.
Trump and Xi first met in 2017 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Their most recent encounter occurred in May during a two-day state visit by Trump to Beijing, where they discussed tariffs, rare mineral trade, and the Strait of Hormuz. The visit resulted in the announcement of a “Board of Trade” designed to reduce tariffs on non-security-risk products. In June, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative sought public input on product categories eligible for this mechanism, though the administration has provided few updates since then.
Human control over AI is a bold stance from Xi. I wonder if the Silicon Valley attendees pushed back on that idea.
