Waymo Announces Expansion to Singapore, Targeting 2028 Launch

Waymo has officially announced its expansion into Singapore, marking a significant step in its strategy to grow its autonomous vehicle presence internationally. The company expects to begin offering driverless rides to the public in the city-state by 2028.

Over the coming months, Waymo will transport its first fleet of Jaguar I-PACE vehicles to Singapore. Throughout 2027, company specialists will manually drive these cars through local streets to create detailed maps. This process will also allow engineers to adapt the system to Singapore’s specific road geometry and weather conditions.

This move follows Waymo’s entry into Japan, where it began testing driverless cars in Tokyo in 2025. That marked the company’s first international testing location. Waymo recently revealed that it is already preparing for commercial availability in Tokyo by 2027, with services accessible via its own app and the local GO Taxi application.

In both Japan and Singapore, where public transit systems such as buses and trains are well-established, Waymo aims to provide first- and last-mile connectivity solutions. The service is designed to assist commuters who live outside walking distance of subway stations or those needing quick transit links to catch trains.

  1. Smart move partnering with local taxi apps. Integration is everything for mass adoption, not just the tech itself.

  2. Jaguar I-Pace fleet? Interesting choice for Asia. Hope the battery range holds up in that humid tropical heat all day.

  3. 2028 feels so far away when competitors are already testing. Hope they don’t lose their edge waiting for permits.

  4. Singapore roads are notoriously tricky. I wonder how Waymo handles the narrow streets and unpredictable motorcyclists there.
