A man has died following a shark attack on Friday at Sorrento Beach, located in the northern part of Perth, Western Australia. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to search for the swimmer after witnesses reported seeing the incident unfold.
According to Australian media reports, bystanders observed a massive pool of blood forming in the water as the man was mauled. While the beach was subsequently closed, police confirmed that a male swimmer had been bitten while in the coast but did not disclose the victim’s identity or whether remains were recovered.
“It was reported a male swimmer had been bitten by a shark while swimming along the coast,” a Western Australia state police spokeswoman stated. “The swimmer died as a result of the attack.”
This incident represents the fifth confirmed fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Previous attacks included three spearfishing divers killed in separate incidents during May and June, and a 12-year-old boy who succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after being attacked by a bull shark in Sydney Harbor in January.
Most recently, on Monday, a surfer suffered severe leg wounds near Geraldton, approximately 400 kilometers north of Perth. Data from the Australian Shark Incident Database indicates that the nation typically experiences between two and three fatal shark attacks annually over a 25-year period.
