Established in 2000 to encourage political engagement among younger citizens, the body comprises over 300 elected members aged 11 to 18 who periodically hold debates in the House of Commons when MPs are in recess.
Members of Parliament and youth advocates have warned that eliminating the program would deal a significant blow to youth democracy. However, critics argue the scheme does not offer sufficient value for money relative to its cost. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which provides annual taxpayer funding, has declined to commit to new grants.
