Kyiv unleashed a massive drone offensive against Russia overnight Sunday, launching more than 1,000 unmanned aerial vehicles, including hundreds targeting the capital city. The attack coincided with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, marking the nation’s first wartime ballot since the invasion began over four years ago.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin characterized the barrage as the “largest ever” directed at the Russian capital. He confirmed that 450 drones were intercepted before reaching the city, but noted that strikes damaged a local oil refinery and a residential building.
Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, reported that the attacks resulted in two fatalities—a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman—and wounded 20 other people. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that its air defenses destroyed 1,100 Ukrainian drones across the country, including over Crimea and in the Black Sea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on social media that the operation utilized a variety of domestically produced weaponry, such as the Flamingo and Pelican missiles, alongside drones. The strikes targeted energy and logistics infrastructure.
“These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” Zelenskyy said, emphasizing Kyiv’s strategy to inflict economic pressure on Moscow. The president added that the aim is to make the Russian public feel the impact of the conflict and compel President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a peace settlement.
Sobyanin accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the electoral process, stating that the “enemy failed in this regard.” The voting took place across Russia, as well as in the four Ukrainian regions illegally annexed by Moscow in 2022 and Crimea, which was seized in 2014. Kyiv has consistently condemned these referendums as illegal.
The assault highlights Ukraine’s growing prominence in military drone technology, having become a global leader in developing long-range unmanned systems capable of striking deep into Russian territory. Meanwhile, direct combat along the 1,250-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine has largely stalled due to heavy concentrations of drones and ground robots.
Over a thousand drones? That is an unprecedented scale for strikes this deep inside Russia. I wonder how Moscow’s air defenses will cope next time.
