Approximately 90 residents living near the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone have been evacuated due to concerns that a recent fire compromised the building’s structural integrity, according to the Folkestone and Hythe District Council.
The blaze erupted in the early hours of Saturday morning in the hotel’s basement. Kent Fire & Rescue Service deployed 26 fire engines to the scene at approximately 01:05 BST. Station manager Lawrence Pater described the incident as a “very severe” fire that has prompted officials to seek expert advice regarding the safety of the structure.
Pavilion Court, located on Marine Terrace, houses the displaced residents. A council spokesperson confirmed that those affected have been provided with hotel accommodation in the town while assessments are conducted. The council stated it is working to secure alternative housing for all impacted individuals until the site is deemed safe.
Kent Police confirmed the fire is being treated as suspicious and have appealed for witnesses. Britannia Hotels Group, which operates the Grand Burstin, released a statement emphasizing full cooperation with law enforcement and prioritizing the welfare of guests and staff.
Broad疏散 efforts were coordinated through a welfare center established at Three Hills Sports Park. Local businesses, including Morrisons and The Salvation Army, assisted by providing food and support. Council chief executive Susan Priest praised the community response, calling it an “extremely difficult day” for guests and residents alike.
Guests described a terrifying experience. Ross Honeycomb, 39, recalled being woken by alarms and seeing smoke billowing from the underground car park, followed by explosions. Meanwhile, 91-year-old Kevin Crawford and his wife Kathleen, who were celebrating a two-week stay, said they initially believed the emergency services had the situation under control.
Structural damage from a basement fire isn’t uncommon. Wonder how long the evacuation will last? Hope the temporary housing is decent for these folks.
