Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt have been cast in guest roles for the upcoming second season of ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.’ The casting news was unveiled on Saturday during the franchise’s panel at New York Comic-Con.
Nighy is set to portray Nyk Ake, the estranged father of the character Nahla, played by Holly Hunter. DeWitt will appear as Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and the mother of cadet Tarima, portrayed by Zoë Steiner.
Alongside the casting announcements, first-look photographs from the series were released, featuring Nighy alongside Robert Picardo’s character, The Doctor, and DeWitt opposite Steiner.
The ‘Starfleet Academy’ panel included Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, and Picardo, alongside co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. While a specific premiere date has not yet been announced, the second season is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ in March 2027.
This season is expected to be the final chapter for the series. According to a logline released by the studio, the storyline follows the cadets during their second year aboard the USS Athena. The episode synopsis indicates that the students will face trials regarding leadership, friendship, romance, and morality as they deal with emerging rivalries, diplomatic tensions, and a competitive schoolwide tournament. The arrival of a new cadet is also expected to introduce significant consequences.
Betazed’s First Lady on screen finally? Rosemarie DeWitt as Laytha Sadal sounds like perfect casting. Hoping for decent character development.
So this is the final season? I’m a bit skeptical it’ll live up to the legacy, but casting Nighy definitely raises the stakes.
Wait, Robert Picardo returns as The Doctor alongside Nighy? That is such an unexpected and awesome combo. The panel photos look great too.
Absolutely thrilled about Bill Nighy joining the Starfleet! His gravitas is exactly what this series needed. Can’t wait for March 2027!
