Leinster secure dominant URC victory on Laya Arena return

Leinster bounced back from their opening-series defeats with a commanding 29-5 victory over Cardiff, securing their first United Rugby Championship win of the 2026-27 campaign. The match marked a successful homecoming for the Irish province at the newly redeveloped Laya Arena, now affectionately known as home to the two-time defending champions.

In front of a sell-out crowd of 20,600, Leinster’s return to the €52 million venue—formerly the RDS Arena after two seasons at Aviva Stadium—kicked off with a blistering start. Hugo Keenan opened the scoring after capitalizing on a kick ahead and excellent wing play, before Jimmy O’Brien crossed for a second try following a sin-binning of Cardiff scrum-half Aled Davies. Jack Conan added a third shortly after, putting the hosts firmly in control.

Cardiff offered brief resistance through the tactical kicking of fly-half Callum Sheedy, who found Mason Grady in space for a penalty conversion that narrowed the gap to 15-5. However, Leinster restored a double-digit lead before the break when O’Brien landed his second try from a well-executed set play, making it 22-5.

The second half saw Leinster’s pace drop significantly, with several Ireland internationals returning to action. Jamie Osborne eventually broke the deadlock late in the game to secure a four-try bonus point, capping a comprehensive performance.

For Cardiff, the loss marked a rare failure to reach the play-offs match point threshold, having achieved this only once during their runner-up finish last season. Taulupe Faletau was omitted from the starting lineup due to ongoing niggles from a shoulder injury sustained in March, with head coach Corniel van Zyl opting to manage the 35-year-old’s fitness ahead of upcoming Champions Cup commitments against Northampton.

Leinster will now look to build momentum as they defend their title, while Cardiff faces a tough away fixture against Northampton on October 18 before returning to league action.
