Sony Clarifies Disc Production Cuts: Plant to Reduce Output by 10%, Not 90%

Sony has clarified its stance on the discontinuation of physical video game discs, confirming that the reduction in production at its Thalgau facility will be significantly less drastic than previously reported. While the company maintains its decision to phase out disc-based games starting in January 2028, a recent statement from Sony DADC corrects a key statistic regarding manufacturing cuts.

Initially, reports indicated that the division’s president stated the Thalgau plant would produce 90 percent fewer discs in 2028. However, an unnamed Sony DADC spokesperson told Game journalist Brian Crecente that this figure was inaccurate. The company clarified that the plant will actually produce only 10 percent fewer discs in 2028.

The correction follows rumors from two months ago suggesting the facility was already being repurposed. Sony emphasized the need to avoid misleading information, ensuring stakeholders have an accurate understanding of the transition timeline and manufacturing adjustments.

  1. Typical media panic cycle. Exaggerate the numbers to get clicks, then quietly correct it with a footnote next week.

  2. Does this mean physical games are sticking around longer than expected? A 10% drop suggests a gradual transition, not an abrupt end.

  3. I honestly can’t believe anyone took that first report seriously. The math just didn’t add up for a major hub like Thalgau.
