OpenAI revealed on Wednesday that it has solved the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems established by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. While the achievement marks a significant milestone for artificial intelligence in mathematics, the announcement has triggered controversy regarding research ethics and credit attribution.
The Navier-Stokes equations are central to fluid dynamics, governing how liquids and gases behave. Mathematicians have debated for decades whether these equations always produce realistic results or if edge cases exist where they break down. Solving this problem earns the claimant a $1 million prize, though OpenAI stated it does not intend to claim the reward.
The dispute centers on Tristan Buckmaster, an NYU mathematician, and Levent Alpöge, an Anthropic researcher working independently. According to a statement released by Buckmaster, the pair had been using various large language models, including OpenAI’s Codex tool and its Astra frontier model, to develop their own solution before publishing.
Buckmaster alleges that OpenAI intensified its efforts after learning that his team was nearing a breakthrough. He stated that he asked whether the AI model had been trained on or had access to the sessions he shared with Codex. When told the model did not access user data, he pressed further on training data but did not receive a direct answer.
Furthermore, Buckmaster claims he was approached by Sebastien Bubeck, a mathematician and AI researcher at OpenAI, along with another unnamed individual. They reportedly offered two paths to acknowledgment: either Buckmaster could publish a partial development with OpenAI releasing its full solution the next day, or he could write a solo paper crediting the use of an OpenAI LLM while excluding Alpöge’s name. Buckmaster declined both proposals.
In response, Bubeck and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published their perspectives on social media. Bubeck specifically denied allegations that he requested Alpöge be removed from any publication. OpenAI also maintained that it acted independently and did not utilize the unpublished research from the other team.
OpenAI saying they won’t claim the prize feels like a cheap PR move to deflect blame.
