OpenAI Claims Breakthrough on 90-Year-Old Navier-Stokes Math Problem

OpenAI has declared that it has solved a significant mathematical challenge known as the Navier-Stokes problem, a puzzle that has stumped experts for approximately nine decades. The announcement, detailed in a blog post released on Tuesday, follows earlier reports by The New York Times and Wired.

The company stated that the solution was achieved using an internal artificial intelligence system, described as more advanced than its recently launched GPT-6 Astra. To reach this milestone, the team utilized 10,000 concurrent agents to support the model.

The Navier-Stokes equations deal with the dynamics of fluid and gas flow. It stands as one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, a prestigious list established by the Clay Mathematics Institute, with each solved problem carrying a $1 million reward.

According to OpenAI, the training process for the internal model began on August 28. The company noted that the system displayed unprecedented capabilities during development, though further technical details regarding the proof are expected to follow.
