Republican Megadonors Surge Ahead of 2026 Midterms with Crypto and AI Wealth

A CNBC analysis of Federal Election Commission records indicates that the wealthiest contributors to the 2026 midterm election are decisively backing Republican candidates and causes. Fourteen of the top 20 donors and donor groups identified have exclusively or nearly exclusively funded GOP-aligned efforts, contributing a combined $1.2 billion. This figure represents approximately one-eighth of the $9.8 billion raised through September 25 across the campaigns and super PACs examined by the network.

The financial landscape highlights a growing influence from the technology and cryptocurrency sectors. Seven of the top 20 donors have significant ties to cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, or online gambling industries, contributing roughly $377.1 million together. Major contributors include the Winklevoss twins, who have donated $55.1 million, Crypto.com at $38.6 million, and Coinbase at $57.7 million in the special interest category.

In contrast, Democratic megadonors appear to be bypassing national party structures, though some continue to fund candidates directly. Fundraisers report that the largest checks that traditionally flowed to the Democratic National Committee have not materialized. Sources attribute this hesitation to lingering trauma from the 2024 election, fears regarding democratic socialism, and disillusionment with DNC leadership.

“We don’t have the kind of donors they’ve got,” Matt Bennett of the centrist think tank Third Way told CNBC. “The advantages that the Republicans have are enormous, and no amount of donor enthusiasm on our side is going to close that gap.”

Financial disparities are further evident in advertising expenditures. From Labor Day through September 25, conservative super PACs outspent Democratic counterparts by a ratio of nearly 2-to-1, with $310 million directed toward GOP efforts compared to $174 million for Democrats.

Despite the funding advantage, the Republican Party faces tightening races. The Cook Political Report recently shifted 15 House races toward Democrats and rated the Senate control as a “true Toss Up,” noting that Democrats need to gain four seats. Republican fundraiser Eric Levine acknowledged the disparity but noted the party’s fundraising strength, suggesting much of the money is supporting candidates who struggle to raise funds independently.

Top individual and family donors heavily skew Republican. Nine of the top ten contributors account for 86 cents of every dollar from the top 10, a sharp increase from 67 cents in the 2022 midterms. Saurav Ghosh of the Campaign Legal Center observed that despite populist sentiment against billionaires, their financial impact remains unprecedented.

  1. Wait, seven of the top donors are crypto and AI billionaires? That’s a direct line from their industries to GOP policy. Concerning.

  2. That 2-to-1 ad spend ratio is staggering. Money usually wins, but tight Senate races suggest voters aren’t just buying ads.
