Rb protein promotes breast cancer growth by enhancing estrogen signaling

A newly identified function of the protein Rb sheds light on why blocking cell division can inadvertently strengthen the activity of the estrogen receptor, a primary driver of breast cancer.

In a paper published in Nature, Watt and colleagues demonstrate that the tumor-suppressor protein Rb plays a dual role. While traditionally understood as a gatekeeper that halts cell division, the study shows it can also promote gene expression and influence how cancer cells respond to therapy.

These findings suggest that a more comprehensive understanding of proteins regulating the cell cycle could help researchers develop more effective treatments for certain tumor types by addressing the complex ways Rb operates in cancer progression.
