She regularly consumes two coffees and energy drinks daily, even enjoying soda late at night without any insomnia. However, for many others, the stimulant effects linger long after the last sip, raising questions about the biological mechanisms behind these divergent reactions.

Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance globally, with over two billion cups of coffee consumed daily alongside consumption from cola, energy drinks, chocolate, and supplements. While it enhances alertness and concentration by blocking adenosine—a brain chemical that promotes sleepiness—excessive intake can lead to headaches, anxiety, rapid heart rate, and disrupted sleep. Experts emphasize that caffeine masks tiredness rather than providing new energy.

The primary determinant of sensitivity is how quickly the body metabolizes the drug. After consumption, caffeine enters the bloodstream and is processed by a liver enzyme known as CYP1A2 before being excreted. This metabolic process varies significantly between individuals, taking anywhere from six to 20 hours. Dr. Marilyn Cornelis, an associate professor of nutrition at Northwestern University, notes that caffeine from an early morning cup may still be lingering in the system hours later, potentially causing anxiety if additional caffeine is consumed.

Research suggests this metabolic speed is influenced by genetics and ancestry. A recent study indicates that people of European and South American descent tend to break down caffeine more rapidly on average. However, DNA is not the sole factor. Smoking has been shown to accelerate caffeine metabolism by up to 65%, which may explain why smokers often consume more coffee and why quitting can make usual amounts feel unusually potent. Conversely, certain antibiotics, contraceptive pills, and pregnancy can slow metabolism, allowing caffeine to remain in the body longer.

Tolerance also plays a critical role. Regular consumers develop a reduced sensitivity to caffeine as their bodies adapt, but abstaining for several weeks reverses this adaptation, often resulting in heightened reactions upon resumption.

Sleep experts recommend avoiding caffeine at least six hours before bedtime. Dr. Lindsay Browning, a psychologist and sleep specialist, suggests limiting intake after 2 pm for those sleeping around 10 pm, though she cautions against rigid rules due to individual variability. The NHS advises pregnant women to limit intake to 200mg daily, approximately two mugs of filter coffee, due to links with low birth weight.

Despite concerns about overconsumption, severe caffeine poisoning is rare and typically involves concentrated products rather than beverages. Peter Rogers, emeritus professor of nutrition at the University of Bristol, describes caffeine as relatively safe, noting that adverse effects like jitteriness usually signal the body to stop consuming more. Furthermore, decades of research suggest that moderate coffee drinkers may enjoy better health outcomes and potentially longer lifespans compared to non-drinkers.
