One year after his tumultuous stint leading the Department of Government Efficiency, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has re-entered the orbit of the Trump administration. On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Musk will co-lead a federal initiative dedicated to examining the future of military conflict.
Musk will share leadership responsibilities with Palmer Luckey, chief executive of defense technology firm Anduril, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. This assignment marks Musk’s first official government role since his departure from Doge.
The initiative, designated Project Meridian, is set to operate for a 120-day period. According to a press release from the Department of Defense, the group’s primary objective is to identify the technological capabilities necessary to secure “absolute technological dominance” on next-generation battlefields.
The task force is expected to conclude its work with the release of an unclassified report detailing its recommendations.
Six months ago he was cutting government waste, now he’s leading war strategy? The pivot is dizzying to watch.
Newt Gingrich in a military tech task force? That feels like history repeating itself in the worst way.
I just hope this doesn’t turn into another expensive consulting gig with no actionable results.
Palmer Luckey joining is the real shocker here. He has serious opinions on modern warfare technology.
