Ori Goldberg, Israeli Analyst and Al Jazeera Contributor, Dies at 50

Israeli academic and independent analyst Ori Goldberg has died at the age of 50, his family announced on Sunday. His eldest daughter, Avigail, confirmed the passing on Goldberg’s X account, revealing that he had been undergoing treatment for colon cancer.

“In one sentence, he was the best dad in the world. But you can’t really describe him in one sentence, and I don’t think I’ll have the courage to try,” Avigail wrote in a tribute.

Goldberg’s eldest son, Dave, also posted a memorial on the same platform, describing his father as “the light where things looked dark.”

A regular contributor to Al Jazeera, Goldberg authored numerous opinion pieces focusing on Middle Eastern affairs. His final article for the network, published last month, examined the Israeli government’s response to the award-winning documentary *NAZA* by Yuval Avraham and Rachel Szor.

Previously, Goldberg explored significant geopolitical shifts in Israel. In a December 2025 piece titled “Israel is imploding,” he analyzed whether the state was losing its regional dominance amid growing internal dysfunction. He argued that an international coalition, spearheaded by the United States and including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, was gradually stripping Israel of control over Gaza and pressuring it to halt territorial operations in Syria and Lebanon.

In another December 2025 analysis, “Netanyahu will win again,” Goldberg discussed the likely re-election of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the 2026 vote. He characterized Netanyahu as a figure who embodied the frustrations of his supporters against established elites, noting the prime minister’s ability to challenge Israel’s enemies and break previous diplomatic paradigms.

Beyond his writing, Goldberg was a frequent guest on Al Jazeera English programs, including *Inside Story*. He held a PhD in History from Tel Aviv University, which he received in 2008. His doctoral dissertation examined the role of religious experience in shaping Iranian Shia revolutionary discourse during the latter half of the 20th century.

Goldberg’s academic and professional contributions were recognized with numerous awards and scholarships, including a fellowship at the Mellon Foundation from 2013 to 2015.

  1. RIP to a brilliant mind. It is heartbreaking to hear his family’s tribute. The comment section misses his voice already.

  2. I read his ‘Israel is imploding’ piece last year. Bold take, though I wondered if he underestimated regional alliances.
