McClain Defends Trump’s Tariff Strategy and Supports Miller Amid Allegations

During an appearance on “Face the Nation” on September 6, 2026, House Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain addressed the political landscape surrounding the upcoming midterms, focusing on President Trump’s economic policies and internal party controversies.

McClain defended the president’s strategy of centering the campaign on his leadership ahead of the Dallas gathering, despite his current 39% approval rating. She emphasized that the midterm convention aims to unify the Republican base by contrasting what she described as “communist crazy” ideologies against traditional American values.

Addressing concerns about the impact of tariffs on rural voters, McClain argued that the policies are designed to counter unfair trade practices, noting that Canada has historically imposed steep tariffs on American agricultural products since the 1990s. She highlighted that the administration has established 20 new trade deals, a significant increase from the three negotiated during the Obama era, and praised efforts to eliminate the estate tax to help family farms preserve generational wealth.

Brennan pressed McClain on a report from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, which estimated that tariffs have cost Michigan households approximately $5,619 each since January 2025. McClain acknowledged the short-term pain but criticized Canada for allowing Chinese goods to enter the U.S. market through the country to evade tariffs. She also pointed to a $60 billion trade deficit with Canada as justification for the president’s aggressive stance.

The conversation turned to Rep. Max Miller, whose re-election is being supported by the NRCP despite domestic abuse allegations from two former partners. While acknowledging that several prominent Republicans, including Senator Katie Britt and Senator Tim Sheehy, have called for Miller to resign, McClain stated that she supports all Republican nominees. She characterized Miller as a dedicated advocate for his constituents and expressed hope that the allegations prove unfounded, urging the process to play out.
