Mark Wood has announced his retirement from international cricket, citing a chronic knee injury that ultimately curtailed his career with the national side. The 36-year-old fast bowler concludes his international tenure having represented England in 38 Test matches, where he secured 119 wickets.
Wood’s last appearance for England came during the opening Test of the 2025/26 Ashes series in Perth, where he suffered a recurrence of the knee issue. That injury forced him to miss the remainder of the Ashes and has since ruled him out of action for approximately eighteen months.
In an interview with Sky Sports Cricket’s Ian Ward, Wood described the decision as a complex mix of difficulty, straightforward necessity, and emotion. He noted that while he has always possessed the resilience to fight back from setbacks, this particular injury was different.
“I’ve always found a way where I’ve believed I’d come back and had that resilience… but this time it’s just ground me down really,” Wood said. “I think it’s been a long time since Perth… it’s been a year-and-a-half really where it’s just sort of ground me down to thinking: I’m never going to get back to this level.”
Wood also highlighted the timing of his contract expiration in September as a factor in his decision. He expressed pride in his representation of England but acknowledged the emergence of new talent.
“I never really wanted to give up England, but the lads that are coming through are doing a fantastic job and the news should be about the lads going to get their contracts and I can just focus on other things,” he added.
Mark Wood made his international debut in limited-overs cricket in 2015. His trophy cabinet includes the 2019 One-Day International World Cup victory and the 2022 T20 World Cup title, where he took nine wickets across four matches. However, injuries denied him the chance to feature in the semi-final and final of the 2022 tournament.
Following his retirement, Wood will join the Sky Sports commentary team for the upcoming one-day international between England and Sri Lanka in Durham on Tuesday.
Reflecting on his final comeback attempt, Wood admitted he may have rushed his return from surgery. He revealed that despite extensive rehabilitation and taping, his knee never fully stabilized, particularly on the fast pitches in Australia.
“I knew it was bad because I’d had that previous surgery where I was always trying to chase my tail… Looking back now, it probably never was quite right,” he explained. “Since I’ve had the second operation, things have improved, but not to the point where I believe I could play Test match cricket.”
Wood’s career has been marked by a series of significant injuries, including ankle problems in 2015 and 2016, a side strain in 2019, and elbow surgeries in 2022. His timeline of setbacks underscores the physical toll that ultimately led to his decision to step away from international competition.
