Fariba Hashimi, an Afghan cyclist who disguised herself as a male athlete to pursue her sporting ambitions under Taliban rule, secured a silver medal in the women’s road race at the Asian Games on Tuesday.
Hashimi, who is currently based in Italy, crossed the finish line in second place near Nagoya, Japan. She described the achievement as “something special” and expressed hope that her success would highlight the resilience of Afghan women.
The win comes as Taliban authorities have significantly restricted freedoms for women in Afghanistan. Hashimi’s journey began after she fled the country when the Taliban returned to power, adopting a male identity to continue cycling competitively.
Her medal stands as a symbol of determination for female athletes in a nation where opportunities for women in sports have been severely curtailed.
