Mark Wood Ends England International Career at 36

Mark Wood has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to the career of one of England’s most electrifying fast bowlers. The 36-year-old Durham paceman cited ongoing injury struggles as the primary reason for stepping away from the national side.

Wood’s final appearance came during the first Ashes Test in Perth last November. After returning to action following a 15-month absence due to an elbow injury and subsequent knee surgery, he managed only 11 overs before swelling in his left knee forced him to fly home for treatment. He has not represented England since that match.

In a social media statement, Wood described the decision as a “natural time” at the conclusion of his contract. “I’ve always tried to be resilient and come back from injury to prove people wrong,” he said. “Unfortunately, this time I lost the battle.” He added that medical advice indicated both Test and 50-over cricket were no longer viable options, effectively ending his international dream.

Despite the premature conclusion, Wood leaves behind a decorated legacy. He is a two-time World Cup winner, having played a pivotal role in England’s triumphs in the 2019 One-Day International tournament—where he took 18 wickets—and the 2022 T20 World Cup. In men’s T20 internationals, he retires as England’s sixth-highest wicket-taker with 54 scalps from 38 matches, while also claiming 80 wickets in 70 one-day games.

In Test cricket, Wood took 119 wickets in 38 appearances since his debut in 2015. His contribution was particularly vital during the 2023 Ashes series, where his fiery bowling helped England recover from a 2-0 deficit to level the contest.

Rob Key, managing director of England men’s cricket, paid tribute to Wood’s impact. “It’s been a privilege to watch the latter part of a great career,” Key said. “To have been a point of difference in Ashes series wins, two World Cup wins, and to have thrilled crowds every time he got the ball in his hand is something very few players achieve.”

Wood, who altered his run-up in 2018 to reduce physical stress, hopes to continue playing cricket in some capacity as he moves forward from the international stage.
