Christopher Meloni is set to reprise his role as Elliot Stabler on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” for the series’ 600th episode. The news emerged Tuesday after Mariska Hargitay posted two photographs from the set to Instagram, offering fans a glimpse of the reunited partners.
In the images, Hargitay pointed to the back of Meloni’s head with the caption “Who dat?” before sharing a selfie of the two smiling together, accompanied by the text “Happy 600…” The posts indicate that the actor has returned to film the milestone installment.
This appearance marks Meloni’s second guest spot on the franchise since he departed the main cast. He previously appeared in the Season 27 premiere in September 2025 and made another visit in 2021 while launching the spinoff “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” That latter series concluded last year following a five-season run, leading Meloni to state that the cancellation closed the door on Stabler’s full-time role.
Reflecting on the situation, Hargitay had previously told Variety she attempted to keep Meloni on the show, noting, “I tried so hard to broker that, because it didn’t end great with them.” Meanwhile, Meloni described his departure similarly to when he originally left the series in 2011, emphasizing the need to move forward.
The crime drama, which debuted on NBC in 1999, is currently at 594 episodes. Season 28 is scheduled to premiere on October 8, featuring the landmark 600th episode.
