Israel’s electoral authority has moved to disqualify the two leading Palestinian-led political lists from contesting in next month’s elections, the panel confirmed. The decision marks a significant escalation in the country’s electoral landscape.
Ofer Cassif, a lawmaker for the Hadash party who was among those barred from running, reacted strongly to the ruling. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Cassif characterized Israel as having transformed into a “fully fledged fascist dictatorship” in response to the bans.
The disqualifications are not yet final, and legal challenges are expected to follow. Appeals against the panel’s vote are anticipated as the election date approaches.
Cassif’s description of the state as a dictatorship is harsh, but history shows these bans often silence legitimate opposition voices permanently.
