US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Moscow in an effort to restart stalled negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The trip follows a recent period of diplomatic stagnation, during which peace efforts had largely floundered.
Upon their arrival at the airport on Saturday, the envoys were greeted by Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian presidential envoy and a key interlocutor for the Trump administration’s peace initiatives. Reports from Axios indicate that Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin later on the same day.
The diplomatic mission coincides with mutual agreements from both Moscow and Kyiv to suspend airstrikes during the visit. This development comes shortly after President Trump suggested on Friday that he has a new proposal to end the conflict, though he declined to disclose specific details regarding the plan.
Despite making the conclusion of the war a priority early in his second term, Trump’s administration has yet to achieve significant breakthroughs. The current visit represents another attempt to salvage a diplomatic resolution as tensions remain high on the ground.
