However, the world champions eventually overwhelmed the spirited All Blacks with superior set-piece power in the final quarter.
New Zealand appeared poised for a significant upset in the 55th minute when Will Jordan chased down his own kick and crossed for a try, putting the visitors ahead 17-12. South Africa responded quickly, with Jesse Kriel powering through Leroy Carter to score at the other end.
Malcolm Marx then plunged over from the back of a dominant maul, and Sacha Feinberg Mngomezulu added a penalty to give the hosts a crucial cushion. Although Samisoni Taukei’aho scored a late try to narrow the margin, it was not enough to prevent South Africa from holding on for the win.
The series will conclude next weekend in Baltimore with a fourth and final Test. New Zealand, having won the opening match, will look to secure a draw and salvage the series.
