Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho has issued an apology to Cardiff City’s players after a disturbing incident involving spectators at Fratton Park during their recent 2-0 Championship victory.
The confrontation occurred in the 72nd minute when Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik was involved in a physical exchange with a supporter while retrieving a loose ball. Following the match, Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy alleged that Bielik had been slapped on the face, while social media footage appeared to show the Polish international grabbing a young fan by the upper body.
The situation escalated further when another spectator threw a ball at Cardiff defender Perry Ng, prompting stadium officials to remove both fans from the venue.
Addressing the matter post-match, Mousinho acknowledged the severity of the event. “The referee mentioned there was a bit of a kerfuffle and one of the supporters struck him,” Mousinho said. “It wasn’t a good incident. I spoke to him, he was alright physically, but that is not acceptable.”
The Portsmouth boss reflected on the club’s reputation for creating an intimidating home environment but stressed the need to maintain boundaries. “We aim to make Fratton Park a difficult place to play, which we have done successfully for several years. However, things sometimes cross the line. I understand the passion, but this does not need to go that far.”
Mousinho concluded by reaffirming the club’s commitment to improving the situation: “We extend our apologies to the Cardiff players and the club. We want to eliminate these occurrences.”
