Rep. Angie Craig Announces Candidacy for WNBA Commissioner Role

U.S. Representative Angie Craig (D-Minn.) has officially expressed interest in succeeding Cathy Engelbert as commissioner of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The announcement comes shortly after Engelbert revealed plans to retire, a departure that coincides with a period of significant growth and heightened public scrutiny for the league.

On Friday, Craig took to the social media platform X to declare her availability, writing, “Hey, @WNBA, I’m a free agent in January.” The former congressional candidate is looking to leverage her political experience in the professional sports leadership space.

Craig is no stranger to competitive elections, having previously lost the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota to Peggy Flanagan. Her move to join the WNBA search represents a notable pivot from electoral politics to sports administration as the league navigates its current landscape.
