Fighting between Yemen’s Saudi-backed government forces and Iran-aligned Houthi rebels has resulted in more than 60 fatalities, marking some of the deadliest combat in the region in recent years. The escalation follows a Houthi military offensive targeting government positions along the country’s western coast.
According to medical and military sources speaking to Agence France-Presse, intense exchanges over several hours in the southwest on Saturday claimed the lives of 26 government troops and 31 Houthi fighters. The violence also severely impacted non-combatants, with a missile strike on a bus in the city of Taiz killing six civilians and wounding seven others.
Heartbreaking to read about the civilian casualties. Those bus victims were just trying to get home.
Sixty deaths in one weekend? This conflict shows no signs of de-escalating anytime soon.
Is the international community doing anything concrete? Silence from world leaders is deafening right now.
