Beekeepers Warn of Asian Hornets Threatening UK Food Security

British beekeepers are urging the government to launch a nationwide awareness campaign regarding the growing danger posed by Asian hornets. The invasive species, originally from southeast Asia, is increasingly being linked to the formation of “pollinator deserts,” which experts warn could have significant consequences for national food security.

The yellow-legged hornet is believed to have first arrived in Europe in 2004. Since then, its population has continued to expand, a trend that scientists attribute partly to warmer springs and summers across the continent.

As the hornets spread, their impact on local pollinator populations has raised alarms within the beekeeping community. With pollinators essential for crop production, the decline in their numbers due to predation by these invasive insects represents a critical risk to agricultural yields and the broader food supply chain.
