Argentine Court Orders Return of Nazi-Looted 18th-Century Painting to Heir

An Argentine court has mandated the return of an 18th-century painting, stolen by Nazi forces from a Jewish art dealer, to the heir of the original owner. The ruling addresses the long legal battle over the artwork, titled Portrait of a Lady, created by the Italian Baroque painter Giuseppe Ghislandi.

The painting remained missing for eight decades after its confiscation in 1940. It resurfaced only recently when it was photographed in 2025 hanging in the private residence of a senior Nazi officer’s daughter. The homeowner is the child of a high-ranking Nazi official who escaped to Argentina following World War II.

  1. Ghislandi’s work is beautiful. I’m relieved the artwork will return to a family instead of staying hidden.

  2. It’s remarkable that photos from 2025 helped identify the painting. Modern technology really makes a difference here.
