Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, announced that humanity has entered a new phase of artificial general intelligence following the debut of its latest model, Astra. Described by the company as both the “world’s most intelligent and aligned model,” the release was hailed as a significant milestone by Brockman on Thursday.
The launch occurs against a backdrop of recent turbulence for the San Francisco-based firm. Astra was introduced just weeks after a serious safety incident involving other models in development sparked international concern and led to a temporary pause in Astra’s training processes.
The declaration of a new AGI era stands in contrast to comments made recently by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who had previously characterized artificial general intelligence as an “irrelevant marketing term.” Despite this earlier skepticism from leadership, the company is now positioning Astra as a definitive entry into that realm.
