HomePod Mini 2 Launches With Siri AI, Wi-Fi 6E, and Sound Glow After Six-Year Gap

Apple has officially introduced the HomePod Mini 2, marking its return to the compact speaker market after a six-year absence. The new device brings significant upgrades in processing power, connectivity, and ecosystem integration, most notably enabling Siri AI functionality within the home.

While the HomePod Mini 2 retains the familiar compact design and serves as a HomeKit hub for alarms and smart home management, it introduces four major enhancements over the original model.

Siri AI Comes Home

Powered by the S10 chip, also found in the Apple Watch Series 10 and 11, the HomePod Mini 2 supports Siri AI in two distinct modes. When used independently, it offers improved conversational abilities and music discovery through natural language prompts. When paired with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad, the speaker can access contextual data from up to six devices, pulling information from Messages, Calendar, and Reminders to complete tasks.

Connectivity Overhaul

The new speaker leapfrogs the original’s Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth 5 with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6. Wi-Fi 6E adds a third 6 GHz band, reducing congestion and interference from neighboring networks while lowering latency. Bluetooth 6 introduces enhanced spatial awareness and lower power consumption, which helps maintain connections to critical security devices like locks and sensors even if Wi-Fi fails.

Expanded Surround Sound

Building on legacy limitations that restricted flagship HomePods to stereo pairs, the HomePod Mini 2 works with the new Apple TV 4K to support a four-speaker surround sound setup. This includes compatibility with both new and older HomePod Mini units, provided they have upgraded spatial positioning capabilities. Users can also pair two Mini 2 speakers as a left-and-right audio channel for their Mac.

Sound Glow Feature

In place of a screen, Apple implemented “Sound Glow,” an ambient LED ring on top of the speaker. It visualizes audio in real-time, pulsing with bass and treble, and adopts colors from the album art of the currently playing track. The feature also displays unique animations for ambient soundscapes like rain or forest noises, though users can disable it entirely.

The HomePod Mini 2 is available in five colors—pink, green, blue, white, and midnight—starting October 30 for $149.

  1. Surround sound with four Minis sounds perfect for my tiny apartment. At $149, I might actually pull the trigger this time.

  2. Is Siri AI actually useful for home automation, or just more conversational fluff? I need it to work flawlessly with my locks.
