France has announced it will summon Iran’s ambassador and implement “appropriate measures” in response to the closure of a French-language centre in Tehran linked to the embassy. The decision follows a statement from the French Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemning the action as an unacceptable assault on its cultural presence.
“This new attack against France’s cultural presence in Iran, following the assault on two staff members of the French embassy last July, is unjustifiable and unacceptable,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux stated.
Iranian authorities justified the closure by accusing the French Language Centre (CLF) of violating diplomatic conventions. The judiciary’s Mizan news website reported that the centre was shut down based on instructions from the Tehran prosecutor’s office. Iranian officials alleged that the institution had operated for years under the pretext of language instruction while conducting “illegal acts.”
According to the report, the CLF allegedly abused its status to identify and cultivate networks among Iran’s elite, facilitating their departure from the country.
In response, the French Foreign Ministry confirmed it would take necessary measures to address the situation. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has requested the summoning of the Iranian ambassador in Paris.
Diplomatic ties between Tehran and Paris have deteriorated significantly in recent months. In August, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry detained two French diplomats during a national security investigation into alleged foreign interference. The individuals were subsequently handed over to the French ambassador.
Summoning ambassadors is standard procedure, but what actual measures will France take next? Verbal condemnations only go so far in this climate.
