An 82-year-old man has passed away following a violent confrontation with a 76-year-old individual at a popular beach near Athens, Greek authorities confirmed.
The incident took place on Sunday at Vouliagmeni beach. According to local reports, the dispute began over the use of sun loungers and quickly escalated into a physical fight that drew in other bystanders.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. One observer told the Kathimerini newspaper that screams of distress could be heard from across the beach. Another witness, speaking to Ta Nea daily, indicated that the victim appeared to be waiting for others he had met and had reserved the disputed sun lounger.
During the altercation, the 82-year-old collapsed. Bystanders administered CPR and used a defibrillator before emergency services arrived. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police arrested the 76-year-old suspect. A 21-year-old woman who was accompanying him was also detained; she was released after witnesses reported she suffered a swollen and bloodied face during the scuffle.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact circumstances that triggered the physical altercation and the specific cause of the octogenarian’s death.
