Data released by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service has confirmed that August 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded globally, with an average air temperature of 16.96°C (62.53°F). This milestone exceeds the previous record set in July 2023 and is part of a broader pattern of record-breaking heat affecting both land and oceans.
Samantha Burgess, representing the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts which oversees Copernicus, emphasized the unprecedented nature of the data. “Humans haven’t seen temperatures as hot as today for, arguably, at least the last 100,000 years,” Burgess told the Associated Press.
The extreme temperatures have had severe consequences across the Northern Hemisphere. Western Europe experienced its hottest summer on record, characterized by relentless heatwaves, droughts, and widespread wildfires. Estimates from the EuroMomo monitoring platform indicate that between mid-July and mid-August, more than 32,000 excess deaths in Europe were linked to the intense heat.
Marine environments are also facing significant stress, with ocean temperatures outside polar regions tying their own monthly records. This continues a three-month streak of record-breaking warmth in the world’s seas, posing serious risks to coral reefs, marine life, and coastal communities.
Scientists attribute these extremes primarily to human-induced climate change fueled by fossil fuel consumption. United Nations climate chief Simon Stiell stated, “The evidence is irrefutable: this is the spiraling price of humanity’s fossil fuel addiction, and the global climate crisis it is fueling.” He added that records will continue to fall until the world stops burning coal, oil, and gas.
Current long-term warming averages approximately 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, sitting just below the 1.5°C threshold outlined in the Paris Agreement. However, the UN recently declared that meeting this 1.5°C target is no longer achievable and urged accelerated cuts to greenhouse gas emissions.
Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, noted that the warming trend was predictable. “It is now time to stop acting surprised that our warming planet keeps getting warmer. This is occurring exactly as forecast by scientists literally decades ago,” Dessler told the AP. He argued that the critical issue is not whether heat records will continue to break, but whether humanity will take meaningful action or passively observe the consequences.
Compounding the climate crisis, the expected onset of one of the strongest El Nino events in modern history is anticipated to bring unusually warm Pacific waters, further increasing the likelihood of extreme weather phenomena such as floods, droughts, and wildfires worldwide.
