Remote Sensors Capture the Moment a Devastating Tsunami Was Born

Researchers have identified a reliable method for detecting tsunamis generated by volcanic eruptions, thanks to an analysis of data from one of the most powerful explosions of the 21st century. The findings, published in Science Advances, show that seismic sensors located far from the event can pinpoint the exact moment a catastrophic wave is created.

The study focuses on the January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano in the South Pacific Ocean. The resulting tsunamis caused widespread destruction across the region, including significant damage to buildings on Tongatapu, the kingdom’s main island. According to lead author S. J. Cronin and colleagues, the tsunami was not triggered solely by the explosive force of the eruption itself, but by the collapse of the underwater volcano’s edifice. Seismic data allowed the team to trace this structural failure and demonstrate how it displaced massive volumes of water, generating the destructive waves.

This breakthrough in understanding the mechanics behind volcanic tsunamis could improve early warning systems globally. By recognizing the specific seismic signatures associated with submarine volcano collapses, scientists may be able to issue faster and more accurate alerts for coastal communities at risk.
