Epic Games, the developer behind the hit title Fortnite, is undergoing a significant transformation in its creative processes by embracing artificial intelligence on a large scale. CEO Tim Sweeney revealed the strategic shift on social media platform X, stating that development teams are being reorganized to maximize the use of AI acceleration tools.
The announcement follows reports from Bloomberg indicating that a highly anticipated collaboration with Disney, featuring characters from Star Wars and Marvel franchises, has been delayed. According to the report, directors instructed staff to abandon hand-written coding in favor of AI-generated workflows, including the full generation of game art. Epic Games has not yet released official details regarding the delayed project or commented specifically on the allegations.
Sweeney addressed the broader implications of this shift, clarifying that the goal is not simply to reduce workforce size but to empower creators to build more extensive and higher-quality content. He described the move as essential for the company’s survival in an evolving technological landscape, aiming to produce better code and content more efficiently.
The CEO engaged directly with critics on X, responding to a highly liked comment that accused him of being out of touch. Sweeney countered that while some in the industry may prefer a return to traditional methods reminiscent of 2016, the reality of the present requires adaptation. He emphasized that as a provider of tools to the wider industry, Epic must design for the future that is already emerging.
This decision comes approximately six months after Epic Games confirmed it was laying off over 1,000 employees. At that time, Sweeney attributed the job cuts to a downturn in Fortnite player engagement rather than automation. The current pivot has reignited ongoing debates regarding the role of AI in the creative and arts sectors, with reactions ranging from support to sharp criticism.
