The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently enduring its deadliest Ebola epidemic, with official government figures confirming more than 8,000 infections and almost 4,000 fatalities. According to a report released on Monday by the country’s public health institute, the total case count has reached 8,067, with the death toll standing at 3,901, resulting in a fatality rate of 48.4 percent.
The outbreak, identified as the 17th for the nation since the virus was first discovered in the region, has been declared officially since May 15. However, containment has been severely complicated by widespread public anger and distrust toward government health policies. In a tragic example of this tension, Marie-Celestin Karondwa, acting president of the UDPS party’s federal executive committee in Butembo, was beaten to death by residents on Sunday. The attack occurred after he appeared on a radio program to discuss prevention measures, highlighting the dangers faced by officials attempting to raise awareness in the North Kivu province hotspot.
While the African Union’s health agency, Africa CDC, notes that the pace of new cases has stabilized following an initial surge, the organization maintains that the outbreak remains out of control. Experts attribute the rapid spread and difficult response to a combination of fragile health infrastructure, the remote nature of affected areas, and ongoing armed conflict near the DRC’s borders with South Sudan, Uganda, and Rwanda.
Compounding the crisis is the specific strain of the virus involved. The Bundibugyo variant currently circulating has no approved vaccine or treatment, though several experimental therapies are being tested. Authorities reported critical supply gaps in their latest update, describing a “complete shortage” of experimental vaccine stocks in the northeastern province of Tshopo and noting low treatment capacity in Ituri province.
The World Health Organization has warned that the situation remains far from resolved and projects that the DRC outbreak could eventually exceed the scale of the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which claimed over 11,000 lives across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. In response to the growing crisis, the United States announced last week an additional $267 million in aid, while urging other nations to contribute to a $2 billion fundraising target aimed at combating the disease, which is predominantly found in the DRC.
Frustrating that we are still relying on experimental treatments in 2025. The infrastructure in those remote areas is dire.
