Discord has unveiled the details of its updated age verification framework, following a delay in February caused by community concerns regarding data privacy. The platform originally proposed requiring facial age estimation or government ID scans for users unable to verify their adulthood through internal systems, but opted to pivot after feedback highlighted risks associated with collecting such sensitive personal information.
Beginning this week, the service will automatically classify users into either an Adult or Teen category. This determination relies on non-content indicators such as account longevity, server participation, and general activity patterns. Discord explicitly stated that it will not analyze private messages or voice calls to estimate age. Furthermore, these classifications remain private; they are not displayed on user profiles nor shared with other server members. Users can view their assigned status within the Account Status section of their settings.
According to the company, approximately 90 percent of the platform’s user base will be correctly categorized without requiring additional action. However, individuals who fall into an “Unconfirmed” category will need to verify they are over 18. Options vary by region and may include verification through credit card validation, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, or the AgeKey credential service. For cases requiring biometric checks, Discord mandates that any facial age estimation be processed entirely on the user’s device. Additionally, the company requires third-party vendors to permanently delete user data once the verification process is complete.
Accounts placed in the Teen group will face three primary restrictions. First, direct messages from non-friends will be routed to a message requests inbox. The platform will also issue alerts before accepting friend requests from users who do not share mutual friends or membership in small servers. Second, teens will be blocked from viewing age-gated content, including images tagged as sensitive by content filters, as well as specific servers, channels, and bot commands reserved for adults. Third, a teen’s full profile and activity history will only be visible to friends and members of smaller servers.
Users in the Unconfirmed category will currently be subject to the first two restrictions until they successfully validate their age.
