Municipalities Push Back Against FCC Proposal to Override Local Broadband Regulations

Local governments across the United States are voicing strong opposition to a proposal by the Federal Communications Commission under the Trump administration that seeks to preempt state and municipal regulations governing wired broadband network deployment.

The FCC is currently reviewing public comments on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that aims to override local permitting requirements. According to the commission, numerous local authorities are causing excessive delays in approval processes and imposing steep fees on providers, costs that can make network expansion economically unviable.

While internet service providers have largely endorsed the FCC’s approach, local officials argue the plan is unlawful and would dismantle safeguards essential for public safety. Instead of restricting local authority, municipalities contend the FCC should address how major providers hinder competition through strategies such as permit hoarding, which obstructs rival networks from deploying their own infrastructure.
