British top-ranked player Katie Boulter has been knocked out of the Wuhan Open following a first-round loss to Russia’s Diana Shnaider. The world number 13 defeated Boulter 6-3, 6-1 in a match lasting one hour and 30 minutes.
Boulter contested the opening set competitively but struggled to maintain her form, losing her serve four times in the second set. The result marks another setback in an underwhelming season for the British number one, who is currently ranked 54th globally. Since reaching the first round at Wimbledon in June, she has secured only three singles victories across nine WTA Tour matches and managed just two wins during the four Grand Slam events this year.
The defeat comes during a difficult personal period for Boulter, whose grandfather, Brian, passed away last week. Her brother James described him as her most significant supporter. Prior to the tournament, Boulter took to social media to acknowledge enduring “a tough week”.
In related news, World Tennis announced on Tuesday that Russia and Belarus will remain suspended from the Davis Cup and BJK Cup. During the annual general meeting in Kazakhstan, delegates from 128 member nations voted to extend the bans imposed on the Russian and Belarusian tennis federations in March 2022, following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Although the International Olympic Committee has recently advised against maintaining restrictions on athletes from these nations, the governing body decided to keep the team competition bans in place. However, individual players from Russia and Belarus, including Shnaider, Daniil Medvedev, and Aryna Sabalenka, continue to compete as neutrals in accordance with ATP and WTA regulations.
Three wins in nine matches is brutal. Poor form, though losing to a top-13 player hurts less.
It’s fascinating how Shnaider dominated while playing as a neutral. The rules are complicated.
Did anyone else notice she lost her serve four times in the second set? Uncharacteristic.
Sad to see Boulter struggling so much. Hopefully this rough patch turns around soon.
