El Niño-fueled wildfires destroy nearly 300 homes in Indonesia

A devastating forest fire in Indonesia, intensified by El Niño weather patterns, has destroyed nearly 300 homes and forced hundreds of people to flee their residences. The blaze is part of a broader crisis across the nation, where countries are currently grappling with severe fires and thick haze.

The fire broke out in the Bangka Belitung province on Sumatra island. According to Riza Herdavid, the head of the South Bangka regency, residents first noticed the approaching flames on Saturday and attempted to combat the blaze using portable water pumps, but the situation escalated rapidly.

Authorities have described the current conditions as the worst seen in a decade. The disaster has not only displaced hundreds of residents but has also caused significant harm to local wildlife populations.
