British top seed Katie Boulter has been eliminated from the Wuhan Open following a straight-sets loss to Russia’s Diana Shnaider.
Shnaider, currently ranked 13th in the world, secured a 6-3 6-1 victory in 90 minutes. While Boulter held her own for the duration of the opening set, she struggled significantly in the second, losing her service four times as Shnaider dominated the match.
The defeat adds to a challenging period for Boulter, who is ranked 54th globally. Since exiting the first round of Wimbledon in June, she has managed only three singles victories in nine WTA Tour matches. Her form across the four Grand Slam tournaments this season has yielded just two wins.
The tournament arrives during a difficult personal time for the British player. Boulter revealed she endured a “tough week” following the death of her grandfather, Brian, last week. She had previously paid tribute to him on social media, with her brother James describing him as her most ardent supporter.
Separately, World Tennis confirmed that Russia and Belarus will remain suspended from the Davis Cup and BJK Cup team competitions. During an annual general meeting in Kazakhstan, delegates from 128 nations voted to maintain the bans, which were initially imposed in March 2022 after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine with support from Belarus.
The decision stands despite the International Olympic Committee no longer advising international federations to maintain restrictions on athletes from the two countries. Under current ATP and WTA regulations, players such as Shnaider, alongside Daniil Medvedev and Aryna Sabalenka, are permitted to compete as neutrals.
I didn’t know about the Davis Cup vote continuation. Funny how the IOC dropped the ban advice but tennis bodies stayed firm.
Six straight games in the second set? That’s a total meltdown. Shnaider was just too sharp out there today.
Rough exit for Boulter, but losing a grandfather recently makes this result even harder to swallow. Hope she recovers soon.
