Apple has introduced its long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market, the Duo, revealing that a critical component of its design was engineered with the assistance of artificial intelligence. According to Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, the company utilized AI algorithms and 3D printing technology to create a hinge system designed to address the typical durability problems plaguing the genre.
Foldable devices have historically struggled with longevity, often suffering from significant degradation due to the increased wear and tear associated with their moving parts. Apple claims that the Duo incorporates innovative protective measures to mitigate these issues, starting with the hinge mechanism.
During the company’s Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday, Srouji explained that manufacturing precision is achieved by using AI to match each individual hinge with its optimal housing for perfect alignment. Furthermore, the process involves a confocal laser that progressively scans the topology of every unit. This scan allows the system to 3D print up to 25 micro-layers of a custom photopolymer, a step intended to eliminate residual waviness and ensure structural integrity.
Beyond the hinge, Apple stated that the device features a custom nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections. The company also employs a multi-layer lamination strategy aimed at boosting overall durability. While these technical enhancements suggest Apple is addressing key failure points found in previous foldable attempts, it remains to be seen how well the Duo will hold up to long-term physical stress in consumer hands.
