Amazon Prime Air Cargo Plane Overruns Runway at Miami International, Triggers Ground Stop

Miami International Airport imposed a ground stop on Sunday afternoon after a cargo aircraft exceeded the end of a runway and collided with multiple vehicles. The FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center issued the restriction around 2:30 p.m., noting that all departure facilities were affected and the pause could be prolonged.

Officials later confirmed the aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 operating as an Amazon Prime Air flight that had departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miami-Dade Aviation stated the plane overran the airport’s diagonal runway and became disabled at the northwest end of the facility.

The collision occurred near the 2100 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR), the aircraft caught fire after impact. More than 60 emergency units responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities confirmed that several patients were involved, though the total number of injuries remained unclear. As of 2:56 p.m., all runways and taxiways were closed, halting both arrivals and departures.

The ground stop disrupted domestic flights across nearly the entire United States. The FAA and local authorities continue to investigate the incident.
