An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport (MIA) on Sunday afternoon, creating a scene of thick black smoke and triggering a major emergency response. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the Boeing 767, identified as Flight 7598, overextended while landing around 2 p.m. ET. The flight had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Video footage circulating on social media showed the aircraft coming to rest off the runway with its tail extending over a perimeter fence. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported “multiple patients” at the scene and deployed more than 60 fire units to extinguish the resulting blaze.
The Miami-Dade Aviation Department stated that the plane disabled the diagonal runway at the northwest end of the airport. Consequently, all runways and taxiways at MIA were closed as of 3 p.m. The FAA issued a ground stop for arrivals, initially set until 3 p.m. and later extended until 4:30 p.m.
The FAA announced it would investigate the crash. Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
Amazon needs to explain what happened immediately. ‘No comment’ isn’t going to cut it for a plane on fire.
I took off from MIA last week. Hope they fix this fast before my flight home next month gets delayed too!
