Amazon Echo Discounts Ahead of Prime Day: What’s Worth Buying

Amazon has launched its fall Prime Day event, featuring early sales on Alexa-powered hardware. However, consumers should approach these discounts with caution. In late August, Amazon increased prices across several device categories, meaning the current lineup offers fewer bargains than in previous years. While some Echo units are listed at a $40 reduction, this was partially offset by a prior $20 price hike, resulting in a net saving that many may find marginal.

As a long-time tester of Amazon Alexa speakers since their 2012 debut and WIRED’s dedicated Kindle reviewer, the assessment is that these deals reflect permanent pricing adjustments rather than temporary promotional tactics. Therefore, if a specific device is desired, purchasing now during this pre-event window is advisable.

Currently, Echo speakers and Fire TV sticks are on sale ahead of the main Prime Big Deal Days event scheduled for October 6-7. In contrast, most Kindle e-readers have not yet been discounted, with the exception of the three Kids editions. Amazon also unveiled new Kindle models today, leaving buyers to choose between the discounted older versions or preordering the latest releases. Notably, the Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Scribe, and Eero routers are not currently discounted, though broader markdowns are expected once the event officially begins.

Given the recent price increases on Kindle and Eero products, it is recommended to wait for sales before purchasing those items, even if the percentage discount feels similar to past years.

For those looking for the best early deals on Alexa speakers, two models stand out:

The second-generation Echo Spot, revived in 2024, offers the strongest value. Priced at $55, it represents a 50% discount from its new list price of $110 and remains a significant saving compared to its original $80 launch price. The device functions effectively as a bedside alarm clock, displaying weather, calendar details, and alarm status via its screen. Crucially, it includes a display without a camera, addressing privacy concerns for bedroom use.

The second-generation Echo Studio is another viable option. It is the only new Alexa speaker that avoided the late August price hike, remaining at its original $220 price point. While the $40 discount may seem modest, it delivers high-quality, room-filling audio suitable for large spaces without distortion.

  1. Are we sure the Spot’s $55 price is a good deal now? Seems like they’re just clearing old inventory with fancy labels.

  2. Finally, an Echo Spot without a camera! That makes it way more appealing for bedroom use than the old models.

  3. A net $20 saving doesn’t feel like much after they jacked up the price. I’ll wait for the main event.

  4. Good find on the Studio. It’s rare that a high-end speaker avoids that August price hike completely.
