In response, the Labour government issued a statement acknowledging the importance of peaceful demonstration but explicitly condemning the behavior in Dover and the resulting travel chaos. Officials expressed understanding for those inconvenienced by the blockage.
The Port of Dover confirmed that all inbound and outbound traffic was suspended during the incident, with operations resuming by midday. P&O Ferries later verified that access had been fully restored. National Highways reported that the blockade caused a traffic queue extending approximately 6.4 kilometers.
Local police engaged with the protesters, who had initially sealed off all terminal routes serving the vital link between southern England and northern France. Chris Vinson, a Conservative Party councillor, described the protest as related to illegal migration. While he noted no reports of physical violence, he characterized the presence of individuals in paramilitary-style gear as highly intimidating.
The demonstration occurs against a backdrop of ongoing political tension in Britain regarding small-boat migrations. Although the Labour government states that Channel crossings reached their lowest summer levels since 2019 due to cooperation with France, the issue has fueled the rise of the hard-right Reform UK party.
Dover remains the UK’s largest international ferry port, handling roughly a third of the nation’s trade with the European Union. Last year, the port facilitated the movement of over nine million passengers and two million freight vehicles.
Blocking a major trade route is never the answer, even if your cause is righteous. This was simply unlawful disruption.
